Fjord Line, a Norwegian shipping company, has been at the forefront of sustainable maritime transportation with its LNG-powered ferries. The company operates two sister ships, MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord, which were the first and largest cruise ships in the world to sail on eco-friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG).
These innovative vessels offer significant environmental benefits compared to traditional heavy fuel oil-powered ships. By using LNG, Fjord Line has achieved:
A 92% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions
A 23% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
A 100% reduction in sulphur emissions
A 98% reduction in particle matter emissions
The use of LNG as fuel not only reduces harmful emissions but also contributes to a cleaner working environment in the engine room and has led to an 80% reduction in the use of cleaning chemicals.
Fjord Line's commitment to sustainability has earned them recognition, including the highest Environmental Ship Index (ESI) in 2015 and an award for energy efficiency in 2013. The company's efforts in sustainable shipping have also led to them being named industry champions in Travel & Tourism by the Sustainable Brand Index in 2023.
